Okay so I woke up this morning to have a text from mum (Gail Cooper) to say that their flight plans from Kathmandu to Lukla airport (the most dangerous in the world!!) have been changed due to bad weather. Obviously after Friday's fatal crash, aviation people over there are on edge and don't want another deadly crash. The bad weather has made it too dangerous for their plane to fly to Lukla, and so their flight has been altered to Phaplu airport, which is 3 days trek South of Lukla. This means that they fly lower, which I am assuming is safer, and will reach Lukla on day 3 of their itinery.
(Pictured below - A Yak - How cute are they!?! :D)
As of yet I am unsure as to whether this will add an extra 2-3 days onto their trek, I'm not sure how this would work however I shall be sure to update everyone as soon as I find out.
The last she texted me was at 2.11am which would be just going on 7am in Kathmandu as they are 4 hours and 45 minutes ahead of the UK. The flight from Kathmandu to Phaplu should only have taken 30 minutes however they might not have a signal to text me. I will be sure to update you all the moment I hear anything though.
In the meantime, be sure that you are following them on all social media including Facebook and Twitter.

Okay they've landed and Dad just texted me to say that yes, it will be an extra two days trekking. Not sure how this will affect their little jungle adventure at the end of the trek, we'll just have to wait and see.
Update
We had our flight changed due to Lukla airport closed dur to cloud coverage and as pilots fly by sight they could not leave. We were told to keep together and suddenly we were moving, a bit confused because we knew Lukla closed. We boarded an airport bus and only when we reached out trin otter plane our guide Rajat Roy told us of his plan. WE were to fly to Phaplu and walk 3 extra days, it was our chance of doing trek as otherwise it may be cancelled. He had not wanted others to hear as more would have followed which may have led to problems.

Phaplu airport is at an elevation of 7,918 feet (2,413 m) above sea level and quite a scary landing. Its gravel runway is 671 metres (2,201 ft) in length.Phaplu is a small village which has a hospital and school not much else. had arrived as the chidren were getting ready to pair up to walk together to school. They seemed very excited to see us. We waited here until our Guide Roy was able to hire porters and a guide as ours were in Lukla.
Our group consists of people from all over the world, including American's Sue and Joe, Aussie's Sam, Dannie, Vivinne (not sure if Mother spelt this right in her text, lol!), Grant, two Peter's, Lawrie and Chris. Also Canadian's Mark and Silvie and Scots Graeme and Rachel. Ages range from mid twenties to 64!!
I've never heard of World Ex using yaks... it's porters all the way. There's even a designated toilet porter. One consolation for the longer trek from below Lukla is that they should acclimatise better when they go higher than Lukla.
ReplyDeleteHiya, yeah they're supposed to have had yaks for the whole trek but obviously that changed when their route changed. That should be them with yaks now though. And that is a very good point about acclimatising better, they seem to have been fine so far which is a good sign. :)
